  • California Local Minimum Wage Increases Take Effect July 1, 2026

California employers should prepare for another round of local minimum wage increases taking effect on July 1, 2026. While the statewide minimum wage increased to $16.90 per hour on January 1, many cities and counties continue to require higher local minimum wages based on inflation and local ordinances. Employers must pay the highest applicable minimum wage, whether required by state law, a local ordinance, or an industry-specific wage requirement.

Effective July 1, 2026, several jurisdictions including Alameda, Berkeley, Emeryville, Fremont, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County (unincorporated areas), Malibu, Milpitas, Pasadena, San Francisco, and Santa Monica will increase their local minimum wage rates. Emeryville will have one of the state’s highest general minimum wages at $20.34 per hour, while San Francisco and Berkeley will increase to $19.61 per hour. Certain industries, including hospitality and healthcare, are also subject to separate minimum wage requirements that may exceed these local rates.

Employers should review where their employees perform work including remote employees, update payroll systems, revise workplace postings where required, and confirm that wage rates are compliant before July 1. Failure to comply with local minimum wage ordinances can expose businesses to wage claims, penalties, and costly litigation. Conducting a payroll compliance review now can help employers avoid unnecessary legal risks and ensure they remain compliant with California’s evolving wage laws.
